Thesis Title: Mechanisms of clausal connection: the importance of social variables
About
My interest areas are sociolinguistics, syntactic variation and forensic linguistics. In my research I focus on syntactic phenomena using variationist methodology.
I am mostly interested on causal relations and how these can be conveyed syntactically. Also, I want to observe if the use of these syntactic structures varies according to the education level, age and gender of the writer. Using this information, I will be able to evaluate the possibility of using the analysis of syntactic structures in forensic contexts, namely in cases of authorship determination.
For this research 120 argumentative texts will be analysed. The informants are 60 Portuguese European teenagers and adults, stratified according to age, education level and gender.
