AbstRAct In 1915, during the construction of Hospital da Santa Casa da Misericórdia (Santo Tirso), in a pinewood at Quinta do Gião, six ceramic containers and one bronze bracelet were recovered. Although their micro context of deposition are not clear, the quantity of containers and their typologies allow to hypothesize the existence, in that same area, of a Bronze Age necropolis. In order to chronologically accurate this context, soot residues from the interior of one ceramic container was dated by AMS. The result, although it cannot be extrapolated to all the recovered materials, confirms the funerary use of this place during the Middle Bronze Age.

AbstRAct Late Bronze Age data is unknown. During Early Bronze the presence of metallic objects and some opulent tombs connected to valley areas seems to " physically sign " landscape. In mountain areas cairns indicate the social importance of death and the necessity of preserving ancestral memory. During Middle Bronze Age data reveals distinct lifestyles and conceptions of death. For communities linked to mountain areas death prevails as a significant form of landscape " imprinting ". In valleys prevails an invisible death, perhaps connected to the increasing lost of corpses importance as collective and spatial references. There are also some immemorial ancestral places (re)visited between Early and Late Bronze Age that denounce collective meaningfulness.

Being at thewestern fringe of Europe, Iberia had a peculiar prehistory and a complex pattern of Neolithization. A few studies, all based onmodern populations, reported the presence of DNA of likely African origin in this region, generally concluding it was the result of recent gene flow, probably during the Islamic period. Here, we provide evidence of much older gene flow from Africa to Iberia by sequencing whole genomes from four human remains from northern Portugal and southern Spain dated around 4000 years BP (from the Middle Neolithic to the Bronze Age). We found one of them to carry an unequivocal sub-Saharan mitogenome of most probably West or West-Central African
origin, to our knowledge never reported before in prehistoric remains outside Africa. Our analyses of ancient nuclear genomes show small but significant levels of sub-Saharan African affinity in several ancient Iberian samples, which indicates that what we detected was not an occasional individual phenomenon, but an admixture event recognizable at the population level.
We interpret this result as evidence of an early migration process from Africa into the Iberian Peninsula through a western route, possibly across the Strait of Gibraltar.

Abstract: This work addresses the settlement strategies during the regional Bronze Age in the basin of the river Ave, Northwest of Portugal. A multivariate occupation of the space during the Middle and the Late Bronze Age is observed. In that phase prevails the occupation of sheltered loci, in lower altitudes, easily acceding to valleys and natural corridors of circulation. In mountain zones occupations are identified in sheltered and well irrigated plateau areas, well irrigated, and near circulation routes. More rare are the occupations on the top of higher altitudes.

New interpretations to a selected set of “hoards” of palstave axes with two rings from the North-western Iberia are proposed. This task was based not only on morphological study of these objects but also on their spatial contexts of deposition.
The morphological (dimensions and weight) variations observed between objects of a same deposit allow us to consider its formation by unique and individual objects. This reveals the use of different casting molds and alloys and, hypothetically, distinct production origins.
At the same time, the distribution of different sets appears to have relations with natural circulation corridors (rivers basins and ridges areas). These were routes known and used since long ago, which certainly promoted more than occasional encounters between distinct human groups.

The present work aims to present the metallic sole findings and deposits of bronze objects datable back from Late Bronze Age known in the river Ave’s hydrographic basin (Northwest of Portugal). At the same time, it pretends to propose some interpretations articulating those materialities with three main vectors: settlements, orography and hydrology.
The available data set includes sole findings and groups of objects, sometimes from different typologies, whose discovering conditions lead us to consider them as deposits. Regarding to operational questions, different typologies of objects were divided in distinct groups: tools’ deposits, composite deposits and weaponry deposits.
Simultaneously, the presence or absence of different typologies in a same deposit determined the creation of
monotypological and pluritypological categories.
Generally speaking, and given the lack of concrete evidences that may undoubtedly relate these objects or groups of objects with settlements, it seems to prevail their relation with certain natural features, like orographies and water courses or water sources. This connection is understood at the scope of the animist interrelations established between human communities and the world. The apparent decontextualization of much of these metallic objects, sole or aggregated, indicates their manipulation and amortization in other contexts, denouncing a kind of practice that seems to date back to Middle Bronze Age.

The EJI-PATER – 1st Young Researchers’ Meeting in Landscape, Heritage and Territory Studies aims to become an scientific annual event based on three basilar lines (Landscape, Heritage and Territory) in the optics of different scientific areas in interaction, such as Archaeology, Architecture, Geology, History, among many others. It also pretends to encourage holistic approaches that contribute to increase multi and interdisciplinarity.
Even though starting from the North of Portugal, studies from other areas of Portuguese and Iberian territory will be welcome.
EJI-PATER was idealized to serve all young researchers: graduated, master’s and PhD’s students, masters or PhD that achieved their grade at least at 10 years, so as other non academic affiliated elements (or teams) (belonging to City Halls, Companies, etc.) which pretend to participate.
The meeting aims to promote all works in the following areas:
(a) studies on landscapes resulting from historical processes; it fit on this item approaches to settlement, exploitation of “resources”, power scenarios and relations, social practices, among others;
(b) studies on cultural and natural heritage (landscapes, geology, etc.) in articulation, including recent concerns and guidelines about Tourism and sustainable development, so on the role of new technologies as allies answering to all new challenges resulting from actual conditions of cultural fruition;
(c) studies on territory and environment in relation to space dynamics, namely all forms of environmental occupation, organization, construction and interaction.
(d) Studies on art (including prehistoric rock art and portable art) as cognitive conceiving and bearers of “messages”;
(e) studies on materialities (ceramic, lithic, metal, glass, etc.), bone remains (human and animal) and paleoenvironmental approaches (such as anthracology, carpology, etc.);
(f) all approaches that the Scientific Commission consider to fit on the Meeting baseline themes (Landscape, Heritage and Territory).
All proposals will be subjected to scientific expertise. The event format will contemplate three days of oral and posters presentations, posteriorly publishing the accepted works.
During the Meeting will occur a competition subordinate to the theme “Present Past”. All type of artistic works will be accepted, such as photos, free drawings, illustrations, etc. The works must include an honour signed declaration attesting its authorship. The works will be exhibited during the event and the winner will became the meeting minutes cover.
