About

I was an undergraduate student in Portugal, studied for two years in Liège, Belgium, and then, in 1993, I obtained my PhD at Duke University, USA. From 1994 till 2000 I was a professor at Indiana University. In 2001 I moved to the University of Minho where I continue to study a variety of issues related to animal learning and cognition (e.g., time and number discrimination, choice). In most of my studies, I contrast data with the predictions of simple mathematical models of behavior. In addition to the Psychology of Learning and Mathematics, I have interests in Evolutionary Biology, Philosophy, and the History of Psychology. My work has been published in various journals (e.g., American Psychologist, Psychological Review, Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, Psychological Science, Behavior and Philosophy) and funded by NIH and the Portuguese Science Foundation. I have served as Chief Editor of the journal Behavior and Philosophy and as Associate Editor of the journal Psychonomic Bulletin & Review; currently I am a member of the editorial board of several journals. I was the Program Chair and then the President of the Society for the Quantitative Analysis of Behavior. Since 2005 I am the president of the Portuguese Association of Experimental Psychology.
